Rolex, a brand synonymous with luxury and tradition, made waves at last year’s Watches & Wonders show in Geneva with the introduction of the 1908 – a dress watch unlike anything else in its lineup. Available in yellow gold or white gold with a leather strap and featuring a Perpetual movement visible through a sapphire case back, the 1908 broke away from the brand’s typical offerings. Yet, it was somewhat overshadowed by Rolex’s other bold releases, like the emoji-dial Rolex Day-Date.
This year, Rolex took a more conservative approach, staying true to its classic roots. However, the latest iteration of the 1908 has caught everyone’s attention, standing out as the least “Rolex” watch in the brand’s current collection.
What Sets the New 1908 Apart?
The 1908 made a splash this year with the introduction of a platinum version. While platinum isn’t entirely new to Rolex – it’s been used in models like the Rolex Day-Date and Daytona – a platinum watch on a leather strap is something we haven’t seen from Rolex in quite some time.
Even more striking is the dial. While Rolex has used ice-blue dials on its platinum models before, the new 1908 features an ice-blue dial with two distinct guilloché finishes. The intricate engine-turned patterns on the dial’s center and minute track are unlike anything else in the Rolex lineup, making this watch truly one-of-a-kind.
When you combine the platinum case, ice-blue guilloché dial, leather strap, and display caseback, the 1908 is a stark departure from Rolex’s usual offerings. But this departure is precisely what makes it so appealing.
The Talk of the Town
Despite its introduction last year, the replica Rolex 1908‘s display caseback still feels unusual for a Rolex, which traditionally shies away from such design choices. However, whether you’re a die-hard Rolex fan or a skeptic, there’s no denying the special allure of the platinum 1908. Its uniqueness, combined with its stunning beauty, makes it hard to ignore.
Even those unfamiliar with watches are captivated by its elegance. When I shared a video of the watch on Instagram, a friend with little knowledge of watches commented, “I love this.”
But it’s not just casual observers who are impressed. Watch enthusiasts, known for their critical eye, have also been quick to praise the new 1908. Tony Traina of Hodinkee noted that “the 1908 feels like a standout” in this year’s lineup. Mike Razak of aBlogtoWatch added, “This is exactly what the 1908 should’ve been from the start, with a gorgeous dial and a perfect weightiness.”
In many respects, the new 1908 doesn’t conform to the typical Rolex aesthetic. Yet, this deviation from the norm seems to be working in its favor, enhancing its appeal and making it one of the most talked-about watches of the year.
